HUFFINGTONPOST.COM – James Taylor Has A New Song About The Boston Red Sox

James Taylor can expect a Bronx cheer from Yankee fans for this.

The honey-voiced singer-songwriter has penned a song about his beloved Boston Red Sox and their long-suffering fan base.

It’s called “Angels of Fenway,” and it premiered Sunday with a video on the scoreboard at the Yankees-Red Sox game in Boston’s Fenway Park. It has plenty of references to the Yankees’ longtime dominance in the rivalry. (See the music video above.)

“Eighty-six summers gone by/ Bambino put a hex on the team/ We were living on a tear and a sigh/ In the shadow of the Bronx machine,” the song begins.

The Boston-born Taylor spent most of his youth in North Carolina, but still visited Massachusetts in the summer. He devotes some of the song to his grandmother’s loyalty to the team.

The chorus goes, “Angels of Fenway, hear our prayer/ We have been chastened, we have been patient.”

Of course, the sentimental ode heads toward the cathartic autumn of 2004 when the Red Sox scrapped back from a 3 games to 0 deficit to defeat the Yankees in the ALCS and then sweep the Cardinals to win the World Series for the first time since 1918.

“Oh my God, it was beyond belief,” Taylor sings.

The historic win ushered in a new era of success for the Red Sox, who have won two more Series titles since.

Taylor, who threw out the first pitch and sang “America the Beautiful” during the seventh inning stretch (photo below), said in a statement: “In 2004, that miracle season, that incredible thing that happened and what it meant to Red Sox fans, and to the city of Boston, to all of New England … it moved me deeply and I knew I wanted to write about it.”

The song appears on his new album “Before This World,” which drops June 16.
